About Me

I am a teacher of physics and believe physics extends well into your everyday life. Physics is an exciting adventure that I hope inspires students’ knowledge about nature. My subject area is really quite simple, physics is all about understanding relationships. I have a particular interest in the development and evaluation of new teaching techniques and activities in class, including the use of ICT. I also enjoy my Impact Project Cooking Hub.

About Me

This is my first year teaching at ASHS, and I honestly can say that I have felt so welcomed by staff and students. There is no place else in the world where I would rather be teaching. I teach in the fantastic Science and Biology teams, and feel like I’m still learning as much as my students every time we work together.

Louise Geck

On leave 2022. Impact Project Leader, Chemistry

About Me

I followed my love of learning and chemistry from school to university, sharing and inspiring that love of learning was the natural next step. I started teaching in the UK and moved to teach in NZ over 16 years ago. Currently I am one of the team of leaders for Impact Projects at ASHS, and Wednesday is by far my best day of the week, working with students to develop exciting projects in their chosen area of passion and connecting with the wider community. I am also an Across School Leader for Whānau ki te Ako - Albany Community of Learning, working to enrich the collaboration within the community for the benefit of our ākonga. Lover of all things positive, my family and being active.

Monique Townsend

Science, Biology, Earth Space Science

About Me

I am a science teacher in my fifth year of teaching. Although my trained speciality is biology, my time at ASHS has seen me become a chemistry and earth & space science teacher as well. My passion is helping students make associations to the world around them and between the sciences; allowing them to grow an appreciation for the interconnectedness of everything living and not, and search beyond themselves for the solutions to our modern problems. Along the way, I am privileged to watch and facilitate the growth of the young people in my learning space as they discover their strengths as members of our community.

Rashida Longley

Assistant Specialist Subject Leader Science, Chemistry

About Me

Originally from the UK, I have been in New Zealand for 13 years and count my blessings every day that I was given the opportunity to emigrate to this beautiful country. I have been teaching for over 20 years and have taught a range of ages and courses. As Subject Leader for Science, my passion lies in designing learning where students can see the relevance of their learning to their own lives, understand the world around them and to empower them to solve real world problems.

About Me

I’m a new teacher to ASHS in 2020 and feel very fortunate to be part of this community. I teach Chemistry and Physics and I am proud to bring Future Problem Solving to ASHS as a scaffolded Impact Project. My background is in Gifted Education and I also support students wishing to sit Scholarship examinations in my specialties. My part-time status allows me to follow my passion for Porsche motor racing, so when I’m not at school I’m often at a track somewhere in the country.

Toni Shaw

Assistant Specialist Subject Leader Science, Biology, Environmental Science

About Me

I have been teaching science for over twenty years and cannot think of a better job to have. As the teacher in charge of biology, I of course love this subject, but have also been lucky enough to teach physics as well as earth & space science. More broadly I have a passion for the environment and impact projects. Particularly in how these encourage students to take action so that they can see how they can make a difference in our world.
